The biggest threat to your retirement isn’t the stock market or taxes. It’s your neighbor’s Instagram feed.
After decades of advising American retirees in Israel, I’ve seen portfolios that should deliver comfort and security turn into sources of stress. The culprit often isn’t market volatility or taxes. It’s comparison. When retirees measure their success against neighbors or friends, even a well-structured plan can suddenly feel inadequate.
A couple in Jerusalem may have a strong U.S. pension, a diversified IRA, and more than enough to fund their lifestyle. But one glance at social media—a friend on a luxury cruise, a family member buying an apartment in Tel Aviv—and suddenly their confidence erodes. The numbers didn’t change. The perspective did.
The illusion of “Just a little more”
One of the most dangerous phrases in retirement planning is “just a little more.” Investors who have already reached their goals often take on extra risk to close a gap that doesn’t actually exist. This mindset can lead to unnecessary stress and, worse, poor decisions at exactly the time when protecting wealth should be the priority.
Redefining what “enough” means
Enough isn’t a number. It’s a point where your financial plan supports your life goals without forcing you to constantly chase the next benchmark. For retirees, this means aligning money decisions with values, not comparisons. A portfolio that lets you sleep at night is far more valuable than one that keeps you awake wondering if you’re behind.
Focus on what you can control
You can’t control market swings or what your friends are doing with their money. But you can control your own risk level, spending, and planning. Building a portfolio designed for stability and peace of mind in both U.S. and Israeli markets will serve you better than chasing returns to match someone else’s lifestyle.
